A Study of Modern Chinese Education in Its Budding Stage Author: Fang Ping-lin

Abstract:

Since the establishment of Ting-wen Institute, a foreign language school in 1862 to 1894, many modern schools were established withen the 32 years. This period is called the Budding Stage of Modern Chinese Education. This study was to find characteristics of education in The-Budding Stage and contributions of education to cultural and social development in China.
The findings are:
1. Although education was in old-fashioned system of examination, the learning fields were distributed to a wide range of social, cultural, political, and military aspects; therefore, education was not isolated from society as it was used to.
2. The objectives of education in the Budding Stage were for social development, economic improvement, defeding the nation from foreign aggression, and the last aim was to protect China's cultural tradition at one hand and to catch up foreign cultural development at another.
3. Education of this period was emphasized on the development of military training and technology particularly applied in military affairs. Thus in this aspect education was foreign in nature.
4. There was a conflict between the protection of China's tradition and the seek of western ideas in education. As a result, btch of these efforts used in education did not reach to the expected effects.
5. Foreign ideas were introduced to China and a thought that a new education system was needed for national development which caused the later changes in education and society. This was an important stage in modern Chinese education development.
