Abstract:

This paper deals with Feng Meng-Lung's life and his wrok-Ohing Shih Tung Yen. Chapter 1 gives a general introduction to the Chinese novel, with special references to "Hua Pen" (話本) of Sung Dynasty. Chapter 2 discusses Feng's life career and major works. The next chapter analyzes Feng's ideas about the novel, particularly those which had some influence on his fictional creation. His ideas about the novel are divided into parts-"Popularity" and "Education." Chapter 4 discusses the process of editing Ching Shih Tung Yen, and also explains the sources of materials for studying this work. Chapter 5 not only illustrates the various editions of this work in Taiwan, but presents an overall appraisal of the book.
